HUNGRY OWL PROJECT

HELPING OWLS HELP US.

About the project

The mission of the Hungry Owl Project is to reduce the need for harmful pesticides and rodenticides by encouraging natural predators. Hungry Owl Project is a former program of WildCare, and we help owls by providing nesting boxes, doing research and monitoring of local owl populations, maintaining of owl boxes, and educating the public about nontoxic and sustainable pest management practices.

CURRENT PROGRAM HIATUS

WildCare’s Hungry Owl Project is temporarily paused while WildCare relocates to and completes construction of its new facility, and the program is not currently providing owl box services. The program expects to reassess and share updates once the organization is fully settled in the new campus, so checking back in 2027 is recommended.

The pause is connected to WildCare’s multi‑year facility transition and construction of a new wildlife hospital and education center in San Rafael.

WHAT TO DO IN THE MEANTIME

If you have questions about an existing owl box, WildCare asks that you call the main hotline at 415-456-7283 for guidance.

For new owl box installations or Hungry Owl educational services, please plan to revisit WildCare’s website or contact the organization again around 2027 for the most up‑to‑date information.

A single family of Barn Owls can eat around 3,400 rodents per year, and that total can roughly double if the parents raise more than one brood, making them extraordinarily effective at natural rodent control.
