Name Our New Wildlife Ambassador Opossum

Help Us Name Our New Educational Opossum

Our new Wildlife Ambassador Virginia Opossum needs a name, and YOU can help us choose it!

This young opossum arrived at WildCare with several other orphans. Their mother was killed by a car, leaving them alone and in desperate need of care.

Although her siblings grew up to have normal mentation, agility, and a healthy wariness of humans, this young female never showed the dexterity and defensiveness she would need to successfully survive as a wild opossum.

With space available in WildCare's Wildlife Ambassador Program, our Education Department applied for a permit to keep this young opossum as an educational animal, and the permit was granted.

But she needs a name! Please cast your vote for one of the chosen names below. all of WildCare's Wildlife Ambassador animals have names that help our team educate about their species, and all of our naming options below illustrate some fascinating aspect of Virginia Opossums, North America's only native marsupial mammal.

Here are the naming choices:

Nox - Nox is the Roman goddess of night, and opossums are nocturnal animals.

Zari - The name for opossum in Spanish is zarigüeya.

Elle - For L which represents 50 as a Roman numeral, as opossums have 50 sharp teeth.

Thana - For thanatosis, the act of pretending to be dead.

Sumi - From “apasum” the original Algonquin name for opossums meaning “white animal,” and the origin of the name opossum.

Please use the form below to choose your favorite name, and visit WildCare's Wildlife Ambassador Zone to meet this as-yet-unnamed opossum and our other wonderful Wildlife Ambassadors!
